A 14-year veteran of the Stratford, Connecticut, police department, Quintiliano snapped one afternoon in May 1975, accosting his wife outside the Bridgeport hospital where she worked, shooting her eight times with a pistol.

Arrested for murder (and fired from his job on the force), Quintiliano spent three years in custody before a panel of Judges found him innocent by reason of insanity. After three months of treatment, staff psychiatrists ordered his release, describing Quintiliano as "no longer a danger to himself or others."

Remarried by 1983, Matthew had no more luck with his second fling at matrimony that he had the first time around. Served with divorce papers on February 11, he murdered his wife the next day and was arrested on February 16, faced with another count of first-degree murder.

Held in lieu of $750,000 bond, he was indicted and convicted on the charge, confined to prison when psychiatrists agreed - this time - that he was sane.
