The Haley brothers made a lethal team. Born in 1960 and 1964, respectively, Reginald and Kevin did everything together, sharing drugs and women, ultimately joining forces in a two-man crime wave that would terrorize Los Angeles. Spurred on by what detectives called "a burning cocaine habit," the brothers would participate in an estimated 500 burglaries, 60 rapes, and eight murders over a five-year period ending with their arrest in 1984.

The first to die, in the official tally, was 90-year- old Isabel Burton, beaten to death by the men who looted and ransacked her home on April 20, 1983. Exactly one year later, celebrating the event, 78-year-old D. Robinoff was beaten, raped and murdered in her small L.A. apartment. The brothers missed Willa Gerber, bungling a streetcorner abduction on May 12, but they rebounded five days later, gunning down 15- year-old Jodie Samuels as she ran to catch a school bus.

After their brief excursion into street violence, the brothers reverted to type, victimizing older women in their homes. Laverne Stolzy, 56, was raped and slain on June 26, followed by the beating death of 79-year-old Elizabeth Burns and the strangulation of 89-year-old Elizibeth Karp. August's victim was T. Okauchi, 88, bludgeoned to death in her looted home, with 55-year-old Dolores Clement raped and murdered on September 27.

Arrested on October 11, 1984, the brothers cracked swiftly under interrogation, providing graphic details of previously unreported rapes. In addition to Kevin's various murder charges, the Haley's would rack up 42 felony charges involving 24 separate victims. Reginald led the field, with four counts of robbery, two burglaries, two rapes, two counts of sodomy, two of oral copulation, two sexual assaults, one kidnapping, and one auto theft. Kevin faced trial on thirteen burglaries, one robbery, one attempted rape, and one count of oral copulation. The brothers were jointly charged with six robberies, two kidnappings, one rape, and one count of sodomy.

On August 8, 1987, Reginald Haley was convicted on 20 counts, drawing a sentence of 60 years plus one term of life imprisonment. While theoretically eligible for parole after 30 years, it seems unlikely he will ever walk the streets again. In June 1988, brother Kevin was convicted of murder, rape, sodomy, robbery and burglary in the Dolores Clement case, his jury fixing the penalty at death.

Man Convicted of '84 Rape, Murder of Woman

By Terry Pristin - Los Angeles Times

June 7, 1988

A former dog groomer, once described by police as a "one-man crime wave," was convicted Monday by a Los Angeles Superior Court jury of raping and murdering a Mid-Wilshire area woman in the course of a $15 robbery.

Kevin Bernard Haley, 24, could get the death penalty for the September, 1984, strangulation murder, rape, sodomy, robbery and burglary of Dolores Clement, 55.

The jury, which began deliberations May 24, deadlocked on whether Haley murdered Laverne Stolzy, 56, in 1984, and on attempted rape and oral copulation counts involving a third victim, who did not testify at the trial.

A mistrial was declared on those counts after jurors voted 9-3 for acquittal in the Stolzy murder and 7-5 for a verdict of guilty in the third case, Deputy Dist. Atty. Steven M. Barshop said.

Haley is facing a separate trial for the murder of Jodi Samuel, 15, who was robbed and shot on a Wilshire-area street as she walked to catch a school bus.

After his arrest in 1984, police said Haley had admitted committing six rapes and 53 burglaries. His older brother, Reginald, was convicted last year in a series of rapes, kidnapings, robberies and burglaries and was sentenced to 60 years in prison, plus one life term.

Los Angeles Police Chief Daryl F. Gates said in 1984 that the Haley brothers might be responsible for as many as eight killings, including "some of the most violent murders committed against older women in this city."

Gates also said they were suspects in 60 rapes and 500 burglaries from South Los Angeles to Venice over a five-year period.

During Kevin Haley's three-week trial, jurors heard a tape of Haley confessing to the Clement murder and saw a diagram he drew of the crime scene, Barshop said. His fingerprints were also found at the scene, the prosecutor said.

The penalty phase, which is expected to last at least a month, is scheduled to begin next Monday. Barshop said he plans to introduce evidence about the Samuel murder and the 1979 murder of Elizabeth Burns, 79, of Beverly Hills. Charges were not filed in the Burns slaying.

2 Brothers Held in Crime Spree in Southwest L.A.

By Sandy Banks - Los Angeles Times

March 30, 1985

Two South Los Angeles brothers--one already charged with the rape and murder of two women--were charged Friday with a series of burglaries, robberies, rapes and sexual assaults in connection with a yearlong crime spree in Southwest Los Angeles.

Kevin Haley, 21, and Reginald Haley, 24, will be arraigned Monday on a total of 42 felony counts, Deputy Dist. Atty. Steven Barshop said. The charges involve 24 victims and a series of crimes committed from August, 1983, to August, 1984.

The charges against Reginald Haley include four counts of robbery, two of burglary, two of rape, two of sodomy, two of oral copulation, two of sexual assault, one of kidnaping and one of auto theft. Kevin Haley is charged with 13 burglaries, one robbery, one attempted rape and one oral copulation. Together, the brothers are charged with six robberies, two kidnapings, one rape and one sodomy.

Hearing Due

Kevin Haley was charged last November with the strangulation murder in September of Dolores Clement, 55, and the beating death last June of La Vern Stolzy, 56. Police say he sexually assaulted and killed both women while burglarizing their Southwest Los Angeles homes. A preliminary hearing in those cases will be set next week, Barshop said.

Reginald Haley also faces trial on burglary and drug charges in an unrelated case, Barshop said.

Barshop called the two brothers "hot prowl burglars," who broke into occupied homes at night and often attacked the occupants after burglarizing their homes. They were arrested last fall after Wilshire Division detectives turned up evidence linking Kevin Haley to the murders of Clement and Stolzy. Police said the brothers stole to support their cocaine habits, sometimes working together and sometimes alone.
