Thayne Archibald
was executed at the Nevada State Prison on August 23, 1961. He was
convicted for the crime of murder.
Archibald was a native of Utah and at
the time of his death was 22 years old. Archibald was convicted of
killing Albert Lawrence Waters on August 26, 1959.
Archibald had a long
criminal record, and had been in the Utah Industrial School for five
years. He then spent time at the Oregon State Penitentiary. Three months
after his release from the Oregon State Prison he drove into a service
station in Livermore, California.
At Livermore Archibald robbed Waters
and then forced him into Archibald's car. They then drove to east of
Sparks, Nevada at a place called Painted Rock. There Archibald forced
Waters to walk to a rocky peak overlooking the Truckee River. Archibald
then shot Waters at close range.
Archibald was apprehended in Baker,
Oregon where he was involved in more service station holdups. He was
taken into custody when his automobile developed generator trouble and
was unable to leave the scene.
